As we approach the sixtieth anniversary of the attempted assassination of Hitler on 20 July 1944, this documentary series recalls the fate of all those individuals who in the Nazi tyranny made a stand against injustice, oppression, despotism and violence, and risked their lives in combating the Nazi regime. They knew that the course of history could only be altered by the murder of the despot: the conspirators.

The assassination attempt of 20th of July was both the climax and the tragic ending of the resistance to Hitler. Even in the years before the war there had been a whole series of unsuccessful attempts to kill the tyrant - 42 in all.

This documentary series portrays the dramatic and tragic history of the resistance between 1938 and 1944, and concentrates on the attempts against Hitler's life. What were the motives of the conspirators, what preparations were made, and why did their attempts fail?
